A Guide to Tofino’s Best Beaches, Hidden Gems, Restaurants & Unforgettable West Coast Adventures
Every year, we find ourselves drawn back to Tofino. We started going a few years ago and there’s something about this little town on the west coast of Vancouver Island that keeps pulling us back. The salty air, towering old-growth forests, endless beaches, incredible food, and slower pace have a way of reminding you what life is supposed to feel like.
Tofino is a great destination for more than just the summer season and every trip, no matter the season, ends up following a familiar rhythm. There are beaches we never skip, cafés we always return to, meals we look forward to, and a few secret spots that have become part of our family’s tradition.
That’s the beauty of Tofino. It doesn’t demand a packed itinerary or perfectly planned days. Some of our mornings are spent with coffee in hand watching the waves roll in. Some afternoons disappear wandering the shoreline or browsing local shops. And every evening that is clear enough to see the sky ends with another unforgettable sunset.
This isn’t a guide to doing everything Tofino has to offer in a few short days. It’s simply how we spent four days on Canada’s West Coast, filled with the places we return to year after year (along with some we didn’t have time to get to this trip) and the experiences that keep bringing us back.
If you’re planning your first visit, or your fifth, here’s exactly how we’d recommend spending four unforgettable days in Tofino.
Best Things to Do in Tofino
Over the years, we’ve discovered a handful of places and experiences that have become part of nearly every trip. No matter how many new restaurants open or hidden trails we explore, there are certain traditions we simply can’t skip. Fish tacos from the original Tacofino truck. Surf lessons with the kids. Sunset walks on the beach. Those little moments have become just as much a part of Tofino for us as the ocean itself.
So, if you’re wondering what we genuinely recommend after visiting year after year, these are the Tofino spots we’d tell our closest friends not to miss.
Surfing
Surfing in Tofino is a must, even if your version of surfing is mostly falling, laughing, and trying again. The water is chilly, but with a wetsuit it’s honestly no big deal. Cox Bay, Chesterman, and Long Beach are all fantastic surf spots depending on the day and conditions.
Our kids have taken lessons with Tofino Paddle Surf, while the adults give it our best shot on our own. By the end of the day, the kids are riding waves, the adults are pleasantly exhausted, and everyone somehow wants to do it all again the next morning.
Tip: The best way to end a surf day: hot tub, cold drink and Tacofino.
Hidden Beach Caves
At low tide near Rosie Bay at South Chesterman Beach, there are beautiful sea caves you can explore for a very short window of time.
They’re only safely accessible during low tide, so timing matters. Make your way in, explore the caves, soak in just how wild and beautiful the coastline is, and then head back before the tide rolls in.
We’ve been caught by the rising tide a couple of times, so the walk back can get a little adventurous (make sure you’re paying attention to the waterline and tide charts). Expect wet feet – and maybe wet knees – but it’s all part of the fun.
Wander Downtown Tofino
Tofino’s downtown is small, but that’s part of its charm. Grab lunch at Shed, browse the local boutiques, stop into Salt for beautiful coastal-inspired shopping, or visit Storm if you need surf gear.
Tofino is the kind of town where you can wander without much of a plan and still find exactly what you didn’t know you were looking for.
Hiking
Tofino is surrounded by rainforest, rugged coastline, and some of the most beautiful hiking trails on Vancouver Island. There’s truly something for everyone.
A few of our favourite Tofino hikes are:
Best Rainforest Hike: Big Tree Trail, Meares Island
This one feels magical. Towering old-growth cedars, moss-covered forest floors, and that deep quiet you only find in ancient rainforest. If you’ve ever wanted to experience true forest bathing, this is the place.
Best Coastal Views: South Beach Trail
A short walk that rewards you with rugged coastline, crashing waves, and spectacular ocean views.
Best Easy Hike: Rainforest Trail B
A beautiful, accessible boardwalk winding through lush old-growth forest. Perfect if you want an incredible rainforest experience without committing to a long hike.
Best Hike Near Town: Tonquin Beach Trail
Easy, scenic, and close to downtown Tofino. A great choice for an early morning walk or before heading out for dinner.
Best Family-Friendly Hike: Ancient Cedars Loop
A peaceful forest trail that’s easy enough for little legs while still feeling like an adventure.
Best Longer Walk or Bike Ride: ʔapsčiik t̓ašii Trail
Connecting Tofino and Ucluelet through Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, this incredible multi-use trail is perfect for walking, cycling, or simply taking your time to enjoy the scenery.
Beaches
Come rain or shine, the beaches are the reason Tofino gets under your skin. Whether you’re surfing, walking, picnicking, storm watching, swimming, or sitting wrapped in a blanket beside a beach fire waiting for the sky to turn pink – the beaches are always the main event.
Here are the Tofino beaches we love.
Chesterman Beach
Chesterman is one of Tofino’s most loved beaches, and for good reason. Wide, walkable, beautiful at low tide, and full of classic Tofino energy, it’s somewhere you could spend an entire day without getting bored. And don’t forget the hidden beach caves!
You’ll see surfers, families, dogs, tide pools full of marine life, and people simply standing still, staring out at the ocean. There’s something incredibly calming about this place and has a view that quietly resets you.
Cox Bay
Cox Bay is one of our favourite beaches for both surfing and sunset. The waves are often powerful, the scenery is spectacular, and the open ocean makes the whole beach feel wild and untamed..
Mackenzie Beach
Mackenzie Beach has a much calmer, more sheltered feel than some of Tofino’s surf beaches, making it perfect for families, paddle boarding, and slower beach days.
Some of our favourite evenings happen here. Kayaking and paddle boarding through the kelp forests and looking at star fish on the rocks when the tide is low. Kids digging in the sand until dark. Campfires as we watch last sunset before the vast sky of stars appear.
There are also several fantastic beachfront resorts located along Mackenzie Beach including Crystal Cove where you can rent cabins or RV sites.
Long Beach
Long Beach is breathtaking in that big, cinematic West Coast kind of way. Stretching for kilometres through Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, you’ll find crashing waves, lingering fog, massive driftwood, endless sand, and skies that seem to go on forever.
This place will remind you how wonderfully small you are.
Wickaninnish Beach
Wickaninnish Beach is rugged, dramatic, and one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the area. Take the short walk to the Kwisitis Visitor Centre and enjoy sweeping ocean views while learning more about this incredible coastline.
Sunsets & Star Gazing
Where to watch the best sunsets in Tofino and see the sky open up with millions of stars
I’d happily drive all the way to Tofino on a clear day just for the sunset, and stay for the stars that appear once darkness settles in. Honestly, they’re that good.
Some of the most breathtaking sunsets I’ve ever seen have been here, and sometimes, the most spectacular skies follow a rainy day. If the clouds begin to break just before evening, the light spills across the coastline in shades of gold, pink, and lavender, making the wait more than worthwhile. And because nearly every major beach in Tofino faces west, you’re almost guaranteed a front-row seat to the sunset, no matter where you end up.
Our personal favourite for an evening watching the sun melt away is Mackenzie Beach. Bring a beach chair, light a fire, and stay long after the sun has slipped below the horizon. The bay is calm enough for the kids to paddle board or swim into the evening, and as the last traces of light disappear and the shoreline falls quiet, the stars slowly begin to emerge. First a handful, then thousands, until the entire sky seems to sparkle overhead.
On a clear night, Tofino will inevitably have you looking up, and losing track of time.
Storm Watching
If you visit Tofino during the winter, storm watching becomes one of the most memorable experiences you’ll have. In fact, if someone asked whether I prefer summer or winter in Tofino, I might struggle to answer.
Yes, it rains. A lot. It is the Wet Coast, after all. But with that rain comes dramatic skies, creeping fog, enormous waves, crashing surf, and a cozy atmosphere that makes everything feel even more magical.
For storm watching, Pacific Sands Beach Resort is a fantastic place to stay. There’s nothing quite like sitting in your beachfront hot tub while watching huge waves roll onto the shore below.
Food
A girl’s gotta eat. These are the restaurants and cafés you may find yourself coming back to year after year.
ROAR at Hotel Zed – Best for Families with Older Kids
If your kids are old enough to explore on their own, ROAR is unlike anywhere else in Tofino.
While we settle in with one of their beautifully crafted cocktails and share a few appetizers, the kids disappear into a maze of quirky themed rooms. There’s a fortune teller’s room complete with glass ball and beaded curtains upon entry, a vintage office with a secret doorway leading to a free arcade, a poker room, a dancing room with disco balls, a giant iPad full of music, and a light-up dance floor, and last but not least – a giant life-sized Scrabble wall. Outside you’ll find ping pong, a driftwood Volkswagen van, and a small playground with more games.
The food is fantastic, the cocktails are even better, and it’s one of the few places where the kids can eat and go entertain themselves while we take our time and enjoy.
Worth noting: ROAR doesn’t have a traditional kids’ menu, so we’d recommend it for families with adventurous eaters or older children rather than little ones.

Tacofino Cantina – Best Casual Eatery
No trip to Tofino feels complete without a stop at Tacofino.
The original food truck sits at Outside Break on Pacific Rim Highway, surrounded by surf shops, a chocolate and gelato shop, and a handful of other local favourites. The fish tacos absolutely live up to the hype, and the burritos are worth every bite.
If the line at the original location is stretches out toward the parking lot (which it often does), don’t worry – you can mobile order for pickup, AND there’s now a second Tacofino location in town.
Bonus tip: don’t overlook the tiny shack across the parking lot from the original truck. Their pulled pork poutine is genuinely one of the best we’ve ever had, and we’ve never had a bad meal there.
Wolf in the Fog – Best Date Night
If you’ve spent any time researching the best restaurants in Tofino, you’ve almost certainly come across Wolf in the Fog—and for good reason.
Locally inspired West Coast cuisine, great cocktails, and a warm, intimate atmosphere have made it one of Tofino’s most celebrated dining experiences. It’s the restaurant we’d choose for anniversaries, celebrations, or simply one unforgettable evening.
Shelter Restaurant – Best Patio
Fresh seafood, burgers, share plates, handcrafted cocktails, and a beautiful view overlooking the water.
Shelter strikes that perfect balance between casual and special, making it a great place to wind down after a day at the beach or head out for a date night dinner in Tofino. Whether you’re stopping in for lunch, happy hour, or dinner, the waterfront patio is hard to beat.
Rhino Coffee House – Best Coffee & Doughnuts
Rhino is our go-to for coffee, breakfast, lunch, or one of their famous doughnuts before heading out for the day.
It’s casual, consistently delicious, and right in the heart of town. Whether you’re fuelling up before surfing, grabbing sandwiches for the beach, or simply in need of excellent coffee, Rhino is always worth the stop.
Howlers Family Resteraunt – Best Rainy Day Family Spot
If the forecast calls for rain (and on the West Coast, it eventually will), it’s worth the 20-minute drive from Tofino to Ucluelet.
Bring a handful of quarters, order lunch or dinner, and let the kids loose in the arcade while you enjoy your meal. Between Pac-Man, pinball, pool tables, billiards, and other classic arcade games, there’s plenty to keep everyone entertained. The relaxed atmosphere, generous menu, and family-friendly vibe make it one of our favourite rainy-day escapes on the coast.
Travelling – How to Get to Tofino from Vancouver
Getting to Tofino is part of the adventure. From Vancouver, the trip takes around six hours door-to-door, depending on ferry timing and how many scenic stops you decide to make.
Start by taking the ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo OR Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal to Nanaimo’s Duke Point. From there, it’s about a three-hour drive across Vancouver Island, and the drive itself is spectacular.
Along the way you’ll pass Englishman River Falls, Cathedral Grove, Qualicum Falls, Sprout Lake, Kennedy Lake, Sutton Pass, and countless viewpoints worth pulling over for. By the time you catch your first glimpse of the ocean near Long Beach, you’ll understand exactly why people keep coming back.
The Best Part About Tofino is that it’s wild and wonderfully unpredictable, so leave room for the unexpected.
I’ve learned not to over-plan Tofino. Leave room to wander. To stay for another coffee. To pull over at a beach you hadn’t planned on visiting. That’s where the magic is often found.
During our four-night stay, fog and misty rain rolled in for a good part of two days. Instead of wishing for sunshine, we leaned into it. We wandered through little shops, spent an afternoon at Howlers with friends, lingered a little longer in the hot tub with our morning coffee, and watched the coastline transform as the weather changed by the hour. Those slower moments together, became some of our favourites.
So, another summer trip to Tofino is in the books, and somehow it was exactly what we needed. Beach fires. Salty surf hair. Misty mornings. Sunset paddle boards. Sandy Cloud Towels. Coffee runs. Fish tacos. Long dinners with friends. The kind of sunsets that make everyone stop talking for a minute.
Those are the memories we take home. They don’t have to be perfectly planned to become the best part of the summer.
