Everything You Need for a Perfect Okanagan Escape

Nestled in the heart of British Columbia’s beautiful Okanagan Valley, Vernon sits about 45 minutes north of Kelowna, making it the perfect home base for exploring one of Canada’s most beloved summer destinations.

If you’ve ever visited Kelowna, Penticton, Peachland or Osoyoos, you’ve experienced the Okanagan’s vineyards, orchards and sparkling lakes. Vernon offers that same beauty. Surrounded by Kalamalka Lake, Okanagan Lake, and Swan Lake, Vernon combines crystal-clear water, rolling vineyards, family farms and mountain views with fewer crowds than are found farther south.

It’s often one of those places many travellers pass through on their way to somewhere else, but it’s worth a visit.

Whether you’re planning a weekend escape or spending a week exploring the region, Vernon has everything that makes an Okanagan summer unforgettable. From turquoise lakes and wineries to incredible local food, and farmers’ markets and beaches where you can truly slow down.

Spend a Day at Kalamalka Lake

Locals simply call it “Kal Lake,” and once you see it, you’ll understand why it’s considered one of the most beautiful lakes in Canada.

Unlike most lakes, Kalamalka glows in brilliant shades of turquoise and sapphire during the summer months. The colour comes from tiny crystals of calcium carbonate suspended in the water. As sunlight reflects off these microscopic particles, the lake transforms into the vibrant blue it’s famous for. It almost doesn’t look real.

Rent a paddleboard, kayak or simply spread out a towel on the beach and spend the afternoon swimming in some of the clearest water you’ll ever find.

If you’re visiting with family, Kal Beach offers plenty of room for kids to play, while paddleboard rentals make it easy to get out on the water.

Visit Davison Orchards Country Village

If you only have time for one stop in Vernon, make it Davison Orchards.

Part working farm, part bakery, part market and part family attraction, it’s one of those places that somehow appeals to everyone.

Browse the country store filled with locally made jams, preserves, gifts and kitchen finds before picking up one of their famous fresh pies to take home.

Their pickled garlic has developed something of a cult following—and after trying it ourselves, we understand why.

Before you leave, grab lunch from the café. Their sandwiches are fresh, generously filled and genuinely some of the best you’ll find anywhere in the Okanagan.

Families will love visiting the farm animals, climbing aboard the Johnny Popper Farm Adventure, and wandering through the orchards.

Don’t be surprised if you end up spending half the day here.

Discover Planet Bee Honey Farm

Just down the road, Planet Bee is another Vernon favourite.

Learn how honey is made, wander through the gardens, sample different varieties of honey and browse their beautiful selection of locally made products.

Their free tastings make it a fun stop for both adults and kids, and it’s impossible to leave without bringing home a jar (or three).

Enjoy Brunch at Gray Monk Estate Winery

There are few better ways to start a day than brunch overlooking Okanagan vineyards.

The restaurant at Gray Monk Estate Winery serves locally inspired dishes with panoramic views across Okanagan Lake.

After brunch, stop by the tasting room for a complimentary wine tasting before picking up a bottle—or two—to enjoy later.

Even if you’re not a wine expert, the relaxed atmosphere makes it one of the most welcoming wineries in the valley.

No trip to Vernon feels complete without a visit to Davison Orchards Country Village. This is a family favourite for us and our trip isn’t complete until we’ve popped in for lunch, a wander & some snacks at their market.

Part working orchard, part animal farm, part market, part bakery and part family adventure, it’s one of those rare places that appeals to everyone. Browse shelves filled with locally made jams, sauces and gifts, then be sure to grab one of their famous pies before you leave.

Don’t skip the café, either. Their sandwiches are packed with fresh local ingredients and are easily some of the best in the Okanagan.

Vacation Coffee: Iced Tiramisu Iced Latte with Baileys

2 shots espresso (or 2 tsp instant espresso in 2 oz hot water)
1 oz Baileys Original Irish Cream
6 oz milk of choice
Ice
¼ cup heavy cream
1 tbsp mascarpone cheese
1 tbsp powdered sugar
⅛ tsp vanilla extract
Cocoa powder for dusting

Instructions

• Make the cold foam: Whisk or froth the heavy cream, mascarpone, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract together until thick and creamy.
• Prep the glass: Fill a tall glass with ice cubes.
• Pour the base: Add the milk, then slowly pour the chilled espresso over the milk.
• Spike it: Gently pour the Baileys Irish cream into the glass.
• Top and garnish: Spoon the mascarpone cold foam generously on top and finish with a dusting of cocoa powder

Sitting on the dock after dinner with a crisp glass of rosé, watching paddleboarders glide across Kal Lake as the sky turned shades of pink and gold. Those quiet summer evenings are the ones you remember long after the vacation ends.
